Gothenburg and the West Coast

Gothenburg is Scandinavia’s sailing capital and the gateway to the west coast, a glorious cruising area with its small isles, barren grey skerries, picturesque harbours and isolated anchorages. Its maritime history stretches back over centuries, and if you enjoy raw beauty and the call of the ocean, then this has everything. It is a wild coast, ripe for exploration, but life in the archipelago is relaxed and the way of life encourages you to wind down.

The seas off Sweden’s west coast produce some of the best fish and shellfish in the world, so whether onboard or ashore, in one of the many excellent restaurants, fresh crab and lobster, or prawns, a local speciality, will be on the menu in an alfresco smörgasbord.  If you want to take it one step further, visit Käringön, a small island north of Gothenburg, which has a unique oyster bar with views of the Måseskär lighthouse where you can sit by the water’s edge in a large tub, full of sea water heated by a wood-fired furnace, while oysters and champagne are served on floating trays.

One of the most spectacular features of Stockholm is its archipelago, a unique maritime landscape of more than 30,000 islands and islets, only about 1,000 of which are inhabited. Stretching from Stockholm about 60 km to the east, it is a popular holiday destination and offers magnificent cruising in a breathtaking natural environment. Close to the mainland, the islands are larger and more lush, the bays and channels wider and year-around residents more numerous. As you travel further out towards the sea, the scenery becomes more rugged finally ending in sparse windblown islets.

Weather in Sweden

The best time to cruise the Scandinavian coasts, is from April to August, when you have long hours of daylight and warm sunshine. Temperatures in the summer months are around 20-25C. Winds are fairly light but can be changeable between the islands.
